Wellness is an active process of becoming aware of and making choices toward a healthy and fulfilling life. The Movement Science Center believes wellness is more than being free from illness, we believe wellness is a dynamic process of change and growth. Our clinic provides an opportunity for you to explore your physical health at your own leisure and let us help you live a higher quality life.
The Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA) is a comprehensive assessment used to classify movement patterns and direct manual therapy and therapeutic exercise interventions. The SFMA initally screens for 10 basic functional movements to help the clinician identify individual movement pattern deficiencies and/or pain within movement patterns that is unique to each individual.
A key concept in SFMA is regional interdependence. This refers to the concept that one body part can have an affect on another body part. Common examples include low back pain in which the hip mobility/stability is a major impairment, and neck pain in which the upper back is the main problem area.
The greatest risk factor for injury is a history of a previous injury to the same body part. This fact indicates that the traditional model of treating only the pain generator may not be sufficient. The SFMA gives the clinician a systematic approach to find the CAUSE of the pain instead of focusing only on the symptoms.
The SFMA emphasizes mobility before stability. Low threshold motor learning exercises are used to reinforce proper movement patterns. These exercises are designed to retrain the body how to move properly.
Our Selective Functional Movement Assessment Screen is available for you to self test selected movement patterns and provide us with your results. Based on your responses, our staff will review your screen and designate exercises to help you improve strength and flexibility in order to meet your fitness goals.
